How Ethiopian Solomonic Theology Connects Christ to Davidic Kingship

✍ Tafari Holsey

This is a serious theological subject, so let’s treat it with precision.

Ethiopian Solomonic theology does not merely symbolically connect Christ to Davidic kingship — it embeds Ethiopian monarchy, covenant history, and Christology into one continuous sacred narrative.

1. The Solomonic Claim: Covenant Continuity

Kebra Nagast

The Kebra Nagast (“Glory of Kings”) forms the theological backbone of Ethiopian Solomonic identity.
Its central claims:
∙ The Queen of Sheba (Makeda) visited King Solomon.
 ∙ She bore a son, Menelik I.
∙ Menelik brought the Ark of the Covenant to Ethiopia.
∙ The Davidic covenant continued in Ethiopia.

This is not merely political myth. In Ethiopian theology, it represents:
The transfer of covenantal presence.

If the Ark signifies God’s dwelling, then Ethiopia becomes a covenant nation — not a peripheral one.

2. Christ as the Fulfillment of the Davidic Covenant

The Davidic covenant in 2 Samuel 7 promises:
 ∙ A son of David
 ∙ An eternal throne
 ∙ A kingdom without end

Christ fulfills this in the New Testament.
But Ethiopian theology reads this fulfillment through both:

 1. Messianic fulfillment in Christ
 2. Typological kingship reflected in Ethiopian monarchy
The Ethiopian emperor was never considered divine in Orthodox theology — but he was seen as:
 ∙ A Davidic heir
∙ A protector of the covenant
∙ A guardian of the Church
∙ A living sign of messianic kingship under Christ

Christ = Eternal Davidic King
Emperor = Temporal steward under Christ

3. The Title: “Lion of Judah”

The title “Lion of Judah” originates from Genesis 49:9 and is applied to:
 ∙ The tribe of Judah
 ∙ King David
∙ Ultimately Christ in Revelation 5:5
Ethiopian emperors bore the title:

“Elect of God, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah.”

The theological hierarchy is clear:
Christ = The True Lion

Emperor = Representative of Davidic covenant order

This is covenant kingship theology — not ethnic triumphalism.

4. Ark Theology and Incarnation

This is where Ethiopian liturgical theology becomes most richly typological.
In Ethiopian liturgy:

∙ The Ark (Tabot) represents God’s dwelling.
∙ Mary is seen as the New Ark.
∙ Christ is the fulfillment of what the Ark prefigured.

So the theological chain looks like this:
Ark → Covenant Presence
Mary → Living Ark
Christ → Incarnate God
Davidic throne → Eternalized in Christ
Ethiopia’s claim to house the Ark reinforces its covenant identity — but Christ is the fulfillment, not the Ark itself.

5. Miaphysite Christology and Kingship

“Tewahedo” means “being made one.”
In Ethiopian theology:

Christ’s divine and human natures are united without separation.

That unity parallels covenant theology:
∙ Divine kingship united with human lineage (Davidic descent).

 ∙ Heaven united with earth.
 ∙ Throne united with altar.

Thus, kingship is sacramental — not merely political.

6. Contrast with Western Political

Theology

In medieval Europe:

∙ Kings claimed authority via papal sanction or divine right.

∙ Davidic lineage was not ethnically continuous.
In Ethiopia:

∙ The monarchy explicitly claimed genealogical descent from Solomon.

∙ The covenant narrative was integrated into national identity.

The emperor’s legitimacy rested on:

 ∙ Davidic descent
 ∙ Orthodoxy of faith
 ∙ Defense of the Church

If he failed spiritually, his legitimacy could be questioned.

That is covenant accountability, not absolute monarchy.

7. Christ as the True Solomonic King

Ultimately, Ethiopian Solomonic theology insists:

 ∙ Earthly kings are shadows.

∙ Christ is the eternal Davidic King.

∙ The Ethiopian throne is valid only insofar as it reflects Christ’s righteousness.
This is why imperial coronation rites include:

 ∙ Anointing
 ∙ Biblical recitations
 ∙ Covenant language

The monarchy exists under Christ, not beside Him.

The Core Theological Structure
David → Solomon → Covenant Throne
Christ → Eternal Davidic Fulfillment
Ethiopian Emperor → Covenant Steward under Christ
Christ is the center.

Without Christ, Solomonic descent is empty.
